MAATTELI

Maatteli is a thesis by Petja Heiskanen in which he discusses his own mortality and trauma. Through performance and an Imaginery animal called “Maatteli” Petja travels through his year of 2024 reflecting on death, immortality and pain in personal life. Focus stays on images we can’t actually see, but are present and as important as anything else. Through Existential psychotherapy and research on death, Petja tries to understand his own process of image making.

The project is shot in Krakow and Helsinki during an period of life where the artist was diagnosed with brain disease. The disease was found after sudden loss in personal life and respectfully changed the view of seeing existence.

The meaning of art as a challenger of society's shortcomings is brought out. Art itself acts as a political starting point for thinking, and art has reached a position where it can be used to highlight things that our society tries to erase.

The book consists of a text section that also discusses influences outside the work, and a dummy photo book with 96 pages.
